Photographer Showcase
David Levine
My life has always been about taking photographs. I always wanted to be a
photographer and always will be. As far as I'm concerned it is the best job in the world! Taking a picture isn't any more complicated than writing your name and in all the years, I have never done it the same way twice!! If you can think it you can do it.
There are no rules. As far as I am concerned the more rules you break the better.
The image I have chosen of presenter and actress Zoe Salmon is a case in point. Taken on the stairs of an old pub, using only the day light coming through two dirty old windows from the front and at the top of the stairs behind her. I simply pushed the limits of my D3 to levels most would tell you not to……and because the tripod wouldn't fit in the hallway, taking a deep breath to keep a steady hand, I took the picture.
David Bailey was once asked about the lighting he used, his reply was, minus the expletive, “Available Light” “Ah!” said the man “You use daylight”…”No” said Bailey, again minus the expletive “Whatever's available”. And that's it, no rules whatever you want to do will work……….eventually!
I've never had any official training. I was lucky to get a job as an assistant where I kept my eyes open and my mouth shut and made the tea even when I wasn't asked too!
